Hi, I'm Matt with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be talking about the Kuat Piston SR Bike Rack on the back of our 2017 GMC Sierra 1500. Now, this is gonna be a great option for this truck, because this rack is not gonna interfere with your lift gate at all, and it can carry a lot of different styles of bikes. So let's check it out. So this is gonna be for anyone who has a really nice bike that they just typically don't wanna throw in the back of their bed and scuff it all up. But today, we're mainly gonna be talking about how this rack's gonna interact with the vehicle.
Let's start off with that, and I'm gonna start with the bike. So today, we have this mountain bike with these extra long handle bars. You can tell we're not gonna have any interference with our tailgate back here, so sitting on here pretty good. Even if you're on some really bumpy roads and this is moving around, it's not gonna make contact with anything. Let's say you need to get access to your tailgate.
To do that, we're gonna have to take off our bike. So what I'm gonna do is just come over here. I got two options. I can just simply press this back button here or I can even use my foot. It might be a little bit high for your foot, but I do like that as an option, makes it a little bit easier to work with.
Same thing for this other side. Just make sure you grab ahold of your bike, so it doesn't fall over. And that's what I like about this, is that since we're not making frame contact, we don't have to worry about if we have a carbon frame bike or a bike with a really nice paint job. And from here, I'm just gonna lift up, and take it out for a ride. And now, to get that tailgate access, I'm just gonna push these down.
(bike rack arms ratcheting) Once you have it all the way down, you're gonna have these additional hooks that keep it even lower. This is gonna be nice, because if you're driving around, let's say something bumps into this button back here, typically, it would fly open. These hooks are gonna prevent that. And if I lift my tailgate down, we actually have a lot of clearance in between our rack and the vehicle itself. Now, another reason that I like about this is, let's say you didn't have a rack back here at all. If you have those heavy e-bikes, trying to lift that up all the way here is gonna be quite the lift as opposed to right here. And this is gonna have the weight capacity of 100 pounds per bike. But let me get a real quick measurement of how high this is gonna be sitting. So right now, you would have to lift this up by 23 inches. It really isn't too bad, and this truck is just a little bit lifted up. So in your case, if your truck isn't, it might even be lower than that. Now, speaking of that, let's get a quick measurement of the ground clearance. That is gonna be a little bit under 19 inches. So when you have that heavy e-bike back here, this might drop down by an inch. That's still a good amount of clearance, especially with how close this is to a vehicle where we're not gonna make ground contact. And for the total distance away, since I did just mention that, this is gonna be sitting at about 14 1/2 inches, which is really compact. Now, I know a lot of other racks will have a tilting feature, so you can save more space with this. In our case today, we really don't need that feature, since it is so compact. And on top of that, if it did have some sort of tilting feature to it, typically, that would lower the weight capacity. Another thing that's nice about not having that tilt feature is we're not gonna block anything back here. So our license plate, our backup camera, our taillights, and back window won't be obstructed. And the way this is gonna install, we'll have a two inch shank that goes into your two inch hitch receiver. Now, it'll be held in place with a pin and a lock core. In the very end of this, we're also gonna have this spot here for your anti-rattle device. So you have an included Allen key that will tighten that up. Now, in my opinion, this is gonna be a solid option for our GMC today. Now, something to think about is, this is gonna be a more premium-style rack, it's gonna feel nice, and it's gonna be really easy to use.
