For centuries, countless warriors from the past have tried to fight for the greater good. There is, however, one lesser-known female fighter. Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, was amongst the few women known to have wielded influence on the battlefield. And today we will be talking about her, Aethelflaed the warrior queen who crushed the Vikings.

Aethelflaed was born in 873, and she grew up in a time when the Viking invasion had already begun. Her father, Alfred the Great, established Wessex as an English kingdom free of the Danes and by marrying his wife, Aethelred's mother agreed with him on an alliance between the Kingdom of Mercia and Wessex. However, Aethelflaed has shown herself to be a remarkable leader and political thinker during her lifetime.

It was not until 910 that Aetheflaed gained recognition for her ability to stop Vikings from invading England. Danish Vikings completely dominated northern England for nearly a century, and when Edward the Elder, Alfred the Great's successor, led an attack on Mercia he mistakenly thought that the Anglo-Saxon armies were south of their locations.

This led to the Battle of Tettenhall on August 5, 910. At this time, Wolverhampton was referred to as Tettenhall. In fighting between the Saxons and Danes in what was known as the Midlands Campaign, Atherlflaed's forces defeated Viking armies under Healfdene and Eowils. Thanks to Aethelflaed, the Vikings were totally crushed, and that lead to a surge in combined power that would eventually lead to a unified England.
