What is Threads and How Should You Use It?

Threads is Instagram’s new text-based app designed for sharing quick updates and joining public conversations—basically, Instagram’s answer to Twitter. It’s fun, easy to use, and connects directly to your Instagram account.

🔹 What Is the Threads App?
Threads is a standalone app created by the Instagram team for posting text updates (up to 500 characters), images, videos (up to 5 mins), and links. Your Instagram account is your login. You can import your bio, profile pic, and followers straight from Instagram.

In the future, Threads will integrate with ActivityPub—which means your followers could eventually follow you across platforms, making it a step toward a more decentralised social media future.

🔹 Who Can Access Threads?
Threads is available in over 100 countries. If it’s not in your App Store yet, it’s likely on its way soon.

🔹 How to Set Up Threads
Download Threads App
Login with your Instagram account
Import your Instagram bio/pic or create a new one
Choose public or private account
Decide if you want to follow the same accounts you follow on IG
Tap “Next” and you’re all set!

🔹 How Threads Works
Create posts (aka Threads) with up to 500 characters
Add photos, videos, emojis, tags, or links
Choose private or public settings
Like, reply, repost, or quote other Threads

🔹 Following & Discovery
Follow from Instagram: You can instantly follow accounts you already follow.
Manually Follow: Use the search tab to find and follow new people.
On Your Feed: Tap the “+” under someone’s photo to follow directly.

🔹 Posting to Threads
Tap the notepad icon
Write your Thread—add text, tags, media, or links
Tap Post—done!

🔹 Managing Your Threads Account
Block a User:

Go to their profile → Tap the three dots → Tap “Block”
Turn Off Notifications:

Go to your profile → Tap the two-line menu (settings) → Tap “Notifications” → Choose what to pause or mute
Delete a Thread Post:

Tap the three dots next to the post → Select “Delete”
Deactivate Threads (Not Delete Instagram):

Profile → Settings → Account → Deactivate Profile
(This hides your Threads content but keeps your IG intact)
Note: You can’t yet fully delete Threads without deleting Instagram, but Meta is working on separating the two.

🔹 Features to Explore
Chronological Feed?
Not yet. Threads currently mixes posts from accounts you follow and suggestions based on your interests.

Threads Badge on Instagram?
Want to hide it? Go to your IG profile → Tap the Threads badge → Choose “Hide Badge.”

It’s light, fast, and brings the fun back to social
Great for quick thoughts, updates, jokes, links, and behind-the-scenes chat
Builds a more casual, text-first connection with your audience
Super simple if you already use Instagram
