Years ago I came up with the 40% Rule. I came up with this rule from experiencing it myself. This weekend I got a chance to teach someone exactly how to find more when you think there is no more left.

Shawn went out on this exact course just one week ago and completed 121 miles of the 200. With a fucked up body and mind, he was going to give himself two weeks before he came back out to try it again. Everyone in his circle said two weeks is not long enough to heal the body and mind.

I happened to be in FL with my girl and her family for Thanksgiving. I talked to Shawn on Wednesday and he told me the plan to go back out there in two weeks and asked if I could come in to pace him and help crew. I said I “couldn’t do it because of other obligations but what I can do is meet you on Friday morning and we can knock this motherfucker out!”

That statement shook Shawn. He knew I had run JFK50 just 4 days prior and had no equipment, gear or nutrition with me. On top of that, his body was jacked up from his first attempt.

With doubts in his mind if this could even be pulled off, I simply said “you need to shut the fuck up and listen to everything I say.”

The moral of the story is this- the human mind is more powerful than anyone can possibly even begin to imagine. The problem is that we are losing our imagination of what is truly possible.
