In a quiet but significant policy shift, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is moving to repeal the District’s longstanding sanctuary city law, sparking criticism from immigrant rights advocates and members of Congress.

The proposed repeal, embedded in Bowser’s newly released 2026 budget, would eliminate a provision that currently bars local police from cooperating with ICE in the detention of undocumented immigrants.
