At the 1936 Academy Awards, Gale Sondergaard became the first person to win the newly introduced Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her first screen role ever in "Anthony Adverse".

But her career was tragically connected to some of the darkest chapters in American history and, despite her early acclaim, came to a sudden halt at the end of the 1940s.

In this video, I pay tribute to this remarkable artist, her career and her life - and explain why the Academy's decision to award Supporting Players was not a generous act but rather a desperate attempt to stay alive.
