On Wednesday, May 23 representatives from the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter visit the NYSE to highlight ALS Awareness Month. In honor of the occasion, Dorine Gordon, President and CEO of the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter rings The Closing BellSM.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the former New York Yankee who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939, is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, after the former New York Yankee who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939, is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS eventually leads to paralysis, though for many people, their minds remain unaffected.

There are approximately 5,600 new ALS diagnoses each year in the United States, with 30,000 Americans currently living with the disease. Our nation's military veterans, regardless of their branch of service or combat duty status, are twice as likely to develop ALS. Persons diagnosed with ALS typically die within 2 to 5 years following diagnosis. There is no known cause, no effective treatment, and no cure.

ALS Awareness Month is a campaign to raise awareness for this insidious and fatal disease, in hopes of finding a cure. Throughout the month we highlight the plight of patients, raise funds for scientific research, particularly through our signature event, the Walk to Defeat ALS, and work through social media and special events to bring attention to the disease.

The mission of the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting-edge research and to empower people with Lou Gehrig's disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support. The Greater New York Chapter services New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, the Hudson Valley, and Northern & Central New Jersey.

Besides New York Yankees legend Lou Gehrig, other notable people to die from ALS include baseball great Catfish Hunter, political figures Vice President Henry Wallace and U.S. Senator Jacob Javits, actors David Niven and Michael Zaslow, and musicians Lead Belly and Charles Mingus.
