Valentine Day is just round the corner and I think it is appropriate to share with my viewers here the valentine bamboo panda series of medals. This series of valentine panda medals is sponsored by Peter Anthony and it is a series that has been well received by the coin community.

Peter Anthony is an expert on modern Chinese coins.
Since 2000 Peter Anthony has been researching and writing about modern Chinese coins. He published handbooks and articles on this subject including the first English edition of The Gold and Silver Panda Coin Buyers Guide in 2010, followed by the second edition in 2014 and the third edition in 2017. Since 2018, the book has been available in a Chinese Moreover, Peter Anthony has been publishing China Pricepedia since 2010, this monthly journal provides readers with a price guide to modern Chinese coins.
Peter Anthony is an NGC consultant and serves as the pricing analyst for the NGC Chinese Modern Coin Price Guide.

Since panda coins were first issued in 1982, the Panda has become China’s most popular precious metal collector coin. Millions have been minted and sold.
Now, an official Panda has been struck in the shape of a heart in year 2016. On one side are a pair of Pandas. On the other is a moonlit scene of a bamboo forest. The Valentine Bamboo Panda is a product of the Shenyang Mint, China’s oldest mint. It is struck in pure .999 silver.

This series is designed by one of China's best-known mint artists, Chang Huan. She is the artist for the 2006 Panda and the famous 2012 5 oz. gold 30th Anniversary Panda. She has been the subject of television documentaries and interviews and is profiled in the special 35th Panda Anniversary issue of the official China Gold Coin Culture magazine published by China Gold Coin Inc.
Only 980 pieces were minted in 2016 and 250 pieces were graded and hand signed by Peter Anthony. I am lucky to be able to get a piece graded PF69UC and hand signed by Peter. I also have a piece graded PF70UC.

This series ran from 2016 to 2019.

The next medal is that of 2017. On one side are a pair of Pandas facing each other. On the other is a moonlit scene of a bamboo forest. The Valentine Bamboo Panda is an outstanding gift for the holidays, or the perfect addition to any Panda coin collection. The mintage for 2017 is 500.

For the year 2018, two very special heart-shaped Pandas are minted. The one oz. Valentine Panda is struck in pure .999 silver and the 5-gram Valentine Panda is pure .999 gold. This is the first time that a heart shaped panda is minted in heart shape.
The mintage is only 300 for the gold and 500 for the silver. I like this 2018 valentine pandas very much. They are very cute.

The last year for this series is 2019. 3 varieties were minted. There is the 1oz silver, 9-gram silver and a 5-gram .999 gold. Mintage for the 1 oz silver is 500, for the 9-gram silver is 1000 and the 5-gram gold is 194.

The 2018 and 2019 gold pieces are pretty rare now and a piece is hardly seen these days.

The certificate of authenticity for the year 2019 pandas is different compared to previous 3 years. A lot of detail will emerge under UV light.
