The grounds of an industrial facility in Statesville, North Carolina, were facing environmental challenges. The site was experiencing erosion problems due to steep slopes, inability to sustain consistent vegetation, and wind gusts. The client wanted a long-term solution that was reliable, aesthetically pleasing, low maintenance, and cost effective. Solmax’s LiteEarth Closure System met all the requirements.

Solmax’s role

Solmax’s LiteEarth Closure System allows the project owner to combat soil erosion problems on the site, while also improving the overall aesthetics of the property.

LiteEarth consists of a 40-mil linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) geomembrane, the standard material used for landfill capping applications, and an advanced UV-stabilized synthetic grass. This robust synthetic grass is widely used for the athletic field and airport soil stabilization industries. Laminated together, these two products create a monolithic geocomposite capping system. The resulting composite material is anchored using a grid of pneumatically driven mechanical soil anchors that have historically used for anchoring erosion control fabrics under extreme conditions.

LiteEarth uses permanent earth anchors to create a positive mechanical connection of the system to the earth. As no sand ballast or infill is required for the LiteEarth system, concerns about sediment in stormwater runoff contaminating local waterways and drainage systems were alleviated.
The use of permanent earth anchors meant a lower annual maintenance budget, an attractive component of the decision to use LiteEarth.

Solmax's LiteEarth, which is estimated to have a 50+ year service life under the ultraviolet exposure at the site, had a dramatically lower capital cost than other systems considered, with a lower life cycle cost than any other closure system available.
