Craigmillar Castle

Hello and welcome to my channel where we explore together parts of Scottish history. I hope you enjoy this video and if I earn your subscription today, thank you.

Craigmillar Castle is one of Scotland’s most beautiful and most preserved castles. This castle sitting on the fringes of the city is a popular tourist and filming location. Filming of outlander or Ivanhoe took place here. The ancient ruin was a popular residence for horse-riding, hunting, and, more importantly, plotting away from the watchful eye of the city. The history of this castle is tied closely to the fate of  Mary Queen of Scots.

A trip to Craigmillar Castle should be on everyone’s Scotland bucket list. The castle is easily accessed from Edinburgh’s city centre; it is located only three miles away, with regular buses.

The Preston family of Craigmillar began building the castle in the late 14th century. It was extended over the following two centuries. The labyrinth of stairs and rooms makes the castle an interesting and slightly confusing place to explore. If you climb to the top of the tower, you can see stunning views of Edinburgh Castle, Arthurs Seat, or a panorama of this beautiful capital of Scotland.

Craigmillar was a relaxing bolt-hole away from the centre of the city – and an excellent place to avoid the frequent outbreaks of the plague! Mary, Queen of Scots, was a frequent visitor to Craigmillar Castle during her life.
Mary spent reasonably lengthy periods at the castle – in 1563, In 1566, she fled to safety in the castle after the murder of her close private secretary, David Rizzio. It’s clear that she had her own private quarters. Life wasn’t easy for Mary. In 1567, she was abducted, allegedly raped and then forced by the Scottish nobility to abdicate as Queen of Scotland, handing the throne to her one-year-old son, James.
