Migrant children generally end up joining the workforce earlier than other kids to assist their parents who migrate to Thailand, many undocumented, for economic purposes. These children do not receive any form of education due to their lack of Thai language proficiency and legal status. Their parents, being migrant workers, are too busy making a living and often overlook the importance of education for their children.

In 2005, Raks Thai Foundation initially established learning centers for children of migrant workers under the Prevention of HIV/AIDS among Migrants in Thailand or PHAMIT Project (www.phamit.org). Originally these centers were intended to provide day care for migrant kids left unattended at home while their parents went out to work. In 2012, the day care center was developed with funding from the private sector to be a proper learning center (LC), with daily classes and full-time Thai and Burmese teachers. At Raks Thai learning centers, we provide basic education with Thai, Burmese and basic English classes following Thai and Burmese textbooks. Life skills development is also a core subject to help them grow up with more alternatives. We facilitate referral to Thai school, support their return to Burmese education system and simply equip them with necessary skills to become more than just another manual laborer in the workforce.
