Recompile is a game with many great ideas, but if you were being reductive you could call it Metroid meets Tron. As I have! In this Recompile gameplay we play as an AI in an atmospheric, hacking adventure, with a traditional Metroidvania progression system. Watch as we explore the Mainframe, where the entire narrative of the game takes place within 1 second of real time. In this Recompile preview, Matt is told that as a player you will be encouraged to replay the game, and try different playstyles. Decisions you make affect Recompile’s story, which gives a new twist to the Metroidvania genre. If you’re looking for new metroidvania games, this is probably for you. The story direction was made with the popularity interactive fiction in mind, influenced heavily by Netflix’s Bandersnatch and Twine games.

This isn’t a Recompile review - the game isn’t due until 2020 - but is instead just some early Recompile impressions, where we get to do a huge fall into a bunch of crates, have a look at some of the super-powered abilities, and see the early stages of the game. And no, you won’t be able to jump that high in the final release. Recompile’s weapons will be futuristic as you run, or hack, through the circuits that make up the Mainframe, you’ll even be able to hack enemies. If you are looking for games like Metroid, or games like Tron, this should tick your box.
