Around 8th century B.C. the Eleusinian Mysteries acquire a PanHellenic character and pilgrims from all the ancient world came to Eleusina to participate to the festival. From Classical to Romans period, unique buildings had erected, strengthening the meaning of the festival through the passage of time. The last heyday of the shrine placed in Romans period and its declination some years later around the 4th century A.D. The systematic excavations started at the end of the 19th century and continued in the beginning of the 20th century.

Pretending a contemporary initiate of Eleusinian mysteries, you should follow a specific route. Entering the archaeological site, you will meet the Roman Court which consists of the temple of Artemis Propylaia and Poseidon Pater, the “Eschara”, the Roman Cistern, two Triumphal Arches and the Kallichoron Well. Cruising past them, the Greater Propylaea, the Lesser Propylaea, near to the Ploutonion are the last stops before you enter to Telesterion, the main temple of Demeter. To conclude your time travel you should visit the museum which located some meters away from the sanctuary!
