Lymph and interstitial fluid are vital components of the body's extracellular fluid, essential for maintaining homeostasis, supporting immune function, and facilitating nutrient and waste transport. Although these fluids share similarities, their differences are key to their specific roles.

Interstitial fluid, or tissue fluid, surrounds the cells in tissues, acting as a medium for the exchange of substances between blood and cells. It originates from plasma that leaks out of capillaries due to hydrostatic pressure. This fluid delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells while collecting waste products and carbon dioxide for removal. Its composition closely mirrors plasma but has fewer proteins, as most plasma proteins are too large to pass through capillary walls. The main function of interstitial fluid is to maintain the chemical balance of the extracellular environment, which is essential for optimal cellular function.

Lymph forms when interstitial fluid is collected by lymphatic capillaries, transitioning into a specialized fluid that travels through the lymphatic system. This fluid contains waste products, excess proteins, and other molecules that are filtered through lymph nodes, where immune cells cleanse it by removing pathogens, cancer cells, and foreign particles. The lymphatic system also returns excess interstitial fluid to the bloodstream, preventing tissue swelling and maintaining fluid balance. Lymph composition is similar to interstitial fluid but often contains more proteins and immune cells, especially after passing through lymph nodes.

Lymph is transported through larger lymphatic vessels and eventually drains into the thoracic or right lymphatic duct, which empties into the subclavian veins. This return of fluid and proteins to the circulatory system helps maintain blood volume and pressure. Thus, while interstitial fluid facilitates cellular exchange, lymph aids in immune defense and fluid regulation, showcasing the body's intricate system for sustaining health and homeostasis.
