CABINET APPROVES SI TO PROHIBIT BRANDING/ADVERTISING OF ONLINE RIDE HAILING APPLICATIONS ON MOTOR VEHICLES

Cabinet has approved the issuance of a Statutory Instrument to prohibit branding and advertising of online ride hailing applications on motor vehicles.

According to Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa, the Road Traffic Public Service Vehicles Amendment Regulations, 2025, will address unfair competition.

In a statement, Mr. Mweetwa revealed that during a meeting held yesterday, Cabinet indicated that there is need to amend Statutory Instrument No. 19 of 2024, to prohibit branding and advertising of any signage or information relating to the operators of the online ride-hailing application on a motor vehicle offering online ride hailing services.

Mr. Mweetwa, who is also Minister of Information and Media, said this is in a bid to address unfair competition, public safety risks, consumer protection and transparency, as well as enhanced regulatory control.

He says the introduction of online car hailing services has raised controversy with conventional taxi operators.

Mr. Mweetwa explains that conventional taxi operators have alleged that branding and advertising of online ride hailing applications on motor vehicles is a form of unfair competition.

He says the prohibition of branding and/or advertising will, therefore, ensure fair competition for all operators of taxi services.
