HOME
DAY 11 of my song-by-song introduction to the new album. Keep checking back here as I dissect one album track a day for the next 12 days right up until the album release on the 17th.

We’re nearly at the end now. Track 11 brings us HOME

A song about the things you’ve grown up to believe about yourself being dismantled.

I was told that I was so many things that it turned out I wasn’t. That truth that I assumed about myself literally informed every move I made, every communication I had with others.

It also defines your idea of what love is. You grow up with that as your touchstone for what love looks like.

I think when you leave that situation and begin to realise who you really are. What your strengths and weaknesses are without another person re-writing your personality for you, it can be kind of traumatic. There’s a safety in that false perception because it creates uncrossable boundaries. Leaving those behind is sort of what I’d imagine leaving prison is like.

But gradually, very slowly, you begin to reassemble. Until you become who you probably always should have been. Not without it’s own fears of course. Beginning a new relationship particularly tests your ability to trust not just the other person, but also your own perception of them. Are you reading them correctly? Every move they make can unfairly be a red flag or sound like a warning.

But this is the sound of a very slow emergence. So ultimately, it’s the sound of hope I guess.

'This is my home you know
This is the place he said I belonged
Under the roof of regret
The safety of knowing I’m wrong
This is what learned as love
Til now'
