If there are cars that people have always loved, they are pickup trucks. These are the most convenient and handy cars out there, especially for those who love going off-road. Because of their demand, automakers must ensure that their pickup trucks are up to date. And even though they rarely receive any updates, probably even years later, when they do, they get some amazing updates. This is the case with the Mitsubishi Triton, whose new version has recently been revealed. However, not much is known about this new-generation pickup truck. All we have at the moment are concepts without the camouflage that they were announced with. So, what can we expect from the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton? Let’s find out.
Hello everyone, and welcome back to our channel. Today, we are going to look at the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton and what we can expect from it. The fifth generation of the Mitsubishi L200, popularly known as the Triton, has been around for about nine years. However, it will soon be replaced by a new truck that was first previewed sometime back at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show. And even though it was labeled as a concept, it was more of a thinly covered prototype that had all the production panels in place. In addition to that, it also seemed to have the final split headlight design, even though it was hidden under the camo. The taillights also seem to have a full black tint that blends with the body wrap.
Shortly after the reveal, European-based digital artist Avarvarii took to it to remove the light camouflage of the concept car. This gave us an idea of what a top-end model and a bare-boned tradie pack could look like when they come into the local showrooms later this year or earlier next year.
The current generation of the Mitsubishi Triton that is found in showrooms today was introduced locally in 2015. After that, it received a significant facelift in late 2018. However, the core architecture of this truck can be traced back to around 2005, making the current platform about 20 years old. But ever since Mitsubishi started working on this new-generation Triton five years ago, a lot has changed in the Ute market.
Right now, high-end Utes are the norm, and double cabs are increasingly doubling their duties as family cars. Mitsubishi seems to be following this trend now because the thinly camouflaged concept car appeared to be a flagship model that is aimed to compete with the Ford Ranger Raptor and the upcoming Toyota Hilux GR Sport. But even with all that, there are already some signs that Mitsubishi doesn’t seem to have gone quite far enough with the new Triton.
However, it is very likely that Mitsubishi has tried to minimize development and manufacturing costs to deliver a more affordable option in the booming double-cab Ute segment. And as much as Toyota and Ford have recently reported hefty price rises for their pickup trucks, we can only hope that the new Mitsubishi Triton will not turn its back on customers at the budget end of the Ute class.
Mitsubishi has remained tight-lipped about the technical specifications of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton. However, reports state that it will use an updated ladder-frame chassis that is found on the next-generation Navara. From what we can tell so far, we can also expect a slightly longer wheelbase and possibly a larger bed. The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton also seems to boast swollen wheel arches, a sports bar, and larger side mirrors.
For the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton, there are reports that Mitsubishi is planning on offering it first in Thailand before taking it to the Asian region.
Something that people would love to know is whether Mitsubishi will make an electric version of the Triton pickup. Well, so far, both gas-powered and plug-in hybrid versions of the Triton have been confirmed.
Mitsubishi executive officer Takashi Shirakawa said that an all-electric Triton pickup is still in development but should be part of this new generation of pickups later in the decade.
In addition to this, Mitsubishi is also working on a prototype that has already been entered in the 2023 Asia Cross-Country Rally. This is expected to be this coming August. This explains why the "Team Mitsubishi Ralliart" logos were all over the concept vehicle revealed in Bangkok.
