Are there really higher states of consciousness, or is awakening something far more subtle?

Mystics across traditions describe profound states of unity, absorption, bliss and ego-transcendence. Neuroscience shows measurable changes in the brains of long-term meditators. Developmental psychology maps stages of growth. Spiritual teachers speak of enlightenment.

But are all of these pointing to the same thing?

In this video, I explore what science says about altered states of consciousness and meditation, before turning to the teachings of Ramana Maharshi on samadhi, the “fourth state” described in the Mandukya Upanishad, the vertical scale proposed by David R. Hawkins, and the mystical ascent found in the Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila.

I also look at insights from Plotinus, Meister Eckhart, and William James to explore a deeper question:

Is enlightenment a temporary peak experience…
a developmental stage…
or recognition of the awareness in which all states arise?

If consciousness has levels, how should we understand them?
And if awakening is not simply “higher”, what is it?
