Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has now been identified by the National Professional Development Center for Autism as being an evidence-based strategy for students on the autism spectrum. Cognitive Behavior Therapy has traditionally been used with other populations such as those with anxiety disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, etc.; however, research was not conclusive on how to make this type of therapy work for individuals with autism. This presentation will focus on why cognitive-behavior therapy techniques have now been added and will give some examples of strategies that may be used to increase positive outcomes for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Webinar participants will understand the definition of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), understand the strengths and limitations of using these strategies and be given several examples of CBT strategies designed for individuals with autism.
