This documentary illustrates the gentrification of Galle Fort (in Sri Lanka), a gradual process that began following the fort’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. Galle Fort, founded by the Portuguese and developed by the Dutch East India Company in the 18th century, is regarded as the best preserved Dutch fort in South Asia. The fort is a living heritage city; however, this status is seriously threated by gentrification, and the city’s dwellers moving out due to exponential land values, often being replaced by investors. The documentary also shows how the few remaining residents feel about the loss of their neighbors, something beautifully portrayed in the poem “Selling the Doll House” copied and kept by a shopkeeper in Pedlar Street. The poem was written by Rathna Sri Wijesinghe, a poet and lyricist who formerly lived in Pedlar Street and sold his house to a foreign investor in 2011.
The documentary is produced as part of the Nuffic funded PhD Project “Changes in the Cultural Landscape of Galle Fort” by Uditha Jinadasa, Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University. The PhD project is supervised by Prof. Dr. M.E.R.G.N.Jansen, Dr. Amy Strecker and Dr. T.F. Sonnemann of Leiden University, Netherlands.
