Mr. Causey shows you how to determine molecular and electronic geometry as well as molecular and electronic shapes according to the valence shell electron pair theory (VSEPR). Electronic shapes are based on the arrangement of the electrons. Molecular shapes are based on the arrangement of the atoms around the central atom.

1. The shape of a molecule or polyatomic ion is determined by the repulsion of the bonds and electron pairs.

2. This shape is the most stable when the electron dense regions are as far apart as possible.

REMEMBER: Bonds and lone pairs are both made of electrons and all electrons are negative. So, they repel each other.

There are six basic shapes:
1. linear
2. angular
3. trigonal pyramidal
4. trigonal planar
5. tetrahedral
6. trigonal bi-pyramidal
