Joy Division and Martin Hannett's production methods: Part 2 Implementation. Reaper walkthrough.

Описание к видео Joy Division and Martin Hannett's production methods: Part 2 Implementation. Reaper walkthrough.

note; this video, like the previous one is a live performance I mixed as I talked so apologies if it's not quite quick bang enough for the tiktok generation.

Here we have part two of my deep-ish dive into the production techniques of Martin Hannett (especially with Joy Division).

He was famous for isolating the components of the drum kit, and this is easy in a DAW, we cover different reverberation strategies you can use, discreet processing of each channel, dirtying up the signal you're sending to impulse responses.

2:15 - Distorting the overhead mics.

2:43 - Tueffselberg Reverb

3:37 - Bricasti plate reverb

4:00 - Doubling up snare and kick sounds using a synth.

5:20 - Guitar pseudosynth trem effect

6:40 - Tuning the synthsnare

7:30 - Time based effects

8:24 - Drainpipe style resonant echo/comb filter

9:00 - Airwindows chorus

10:50 - Dub Reverb

11:00 - D shift

12:05 - Eastwood Audio Duet

13:45 - Hannett & Dub

15:46 - Transcendent 2000

17:45 - Conclusion.

Although recorded using Reaper you should be able to use the techniques in just about any DAW.

VSTs and soundtoys used in this tutorial:

The 1970s Roger's drum kit (Stephen Morris of Joy Division used this make, though probably switched out the snare).

Airwindows reproduction of Dan Armstrong's green ringer circuit, as used by Frank Zappa on guitar, I doubt it's ever been used on drum mics lol.

I don't mention it in the video but here is a nice, easy to use compressor

Airwindows Chorus, which when used totally wet gives a pleasing 'seasick effect', I'm going to try it out to get the feeling Robert Wyatt had on his mid 70's work.

D shift is kint of in the same area as the Eventide H910 harmoniser, it's fun and you can do the 'demon voice'

Martin Eastwood's Duet is a non standard chorus algorithym with extra texture capabilities.

The Transcendent 2000 (yes I know I said Transcendental in the video but that's what this VST is called) emulation can be found here
