Security cameras generally don't have vehicle plate-number recognition technology built into them.
But now, artificial intelligence is playing a role in using these cameras, so even without the expensive function built-in, security cameras may be able to detect wanted vehicles.

On the large screen of the control center, shortly after a black vehicle is seen, a warning message pops up marking it as a wanted vehicle.
The vehicle's travel route is tracked in real-time as police cars are dispatched, successfully blocking the wanted vehicle shortly after.
In its demonstration stage here in Chungcheongnam-do Province, incorporating artificial intelligence technology into general CCTVs allows the system to first recognize a wanted vehicle plate number, then continue tracking the vehicle.

In Chungcheongnam-do Province alone, there are some 26-thousand CCTVs, but only 5 percent, or roughly 1-thousand-300, are able to detect vehicle plate numbers. The remaining 95 percent of the security cameras require control center staff to manually look out for wanted vehicles.
But the latest artificial intelligence upgrade would allow these general cameras to detect a vehicle's number plate, which can immediately be cross-referenced with the National Police Agency's wanted vehicle search system.

"The cameras are generally divided to monitor allocated regions. But when a wanted vehicle is detected, the A.I. parts of the camera enable all nearby cameras, which broadens the search and monitoring radius."

Vehicle plate recognition technology installed in CCTVs is very expensive, which is why not many security cameras have it installed.
But the artificial intelligence function is not only much more advanced, but it can help reduce the cost of the function it provides.

"Vehicle plate number detecting cameras cost between 6-thousand to over 7-thousand U.S. dollars. But general cameras are one-tenth the cost."

Chungcheongnam-do Province is looking to spread the use of this A.I. technology to other regions,
all the while expanding the search for tax-delinquent vehicles, vehicles that are heavy polluters, as well as unregistered vehicles.
