Os patos alimentam-se de vegetação aquática, moluscos e pequenos invertebrados. Os Patos-mergulhadores e Patos-marinhos conseguem, alimento por mergulho profundo na água. Os patos, têm apenas um parceiro por época reprodutiva, havendo algumas espécies cujos, parceiros, podem durar vários anos.
