二、會議主題
自然生生不息,人文多元多姿。人類與萬物,共同居存於蒼穹下、大地上,同屬一家,命運連枝。自然界雖不乏生存競爭,但絕不像人類社會的衝突鬥爭,經常走向零和遊戲(Zero-sum Game)。當今天下,舉凡氣候失調、大地荒蕪、生物滅絕、種族衝突、貧富懸殊、強權惡鬥……,或呈現剛強霸凌柔弱,或展示剛強鬥爭剛強。當此之世,我們更迫切需要「共生」的思想運動,以「雙贏」的「無限遊戲」之王道,取代「獨贏」的「有限遊戲」之霸道。共生之道,不否定競爭與衝突,但力求迴避「永不知足」的剛強爭伐﹔共生之道,期待在彼我差異、相依相待的辯證張力中,轉化「一分為二」的生死鬥爭,調節雙方而永保餘地。
中山大學文學院,提出「跨文化漢學之島」的理念與實踐,希望藉此促成「共生」思想的興發運動,為不同的是非立場,搭建對話與轉化的「共生互化」之平台。我們將以臺灣的人文風土、高雄的海洋風韻為據地,一方面,「通古今之變」地對古典漢學資源進行價值重估與持續開採﹔另一方面,「東西之變」地邀請跨領域、跨文化的漢學家、思想家們,齊力集思廣議「共生哲學」,讓作為「跨文化漢學之島」的臺灣,在人類的焦慮年代,發揮其可貴的文化軟實力。
此次研討會將環繞在:漢學的古典研究與當代詮釋、跨文化視域下漢學的價值重估、從漢學資源開發共生哲學的潛力、共生哲學的探討與開闢、深度歧見與齊物轉化、一分為二或合二為一的弔詭思維與共生辯證等可能性議題,提供持續思考共生哲學的多重觀點。

Nature is defined by a dynamic vitalism, and human cultures present a vast plurality. Humanity and the myriad of things exist beneath the vaulted firmament of the universe, on the great land mass of the earth, existing as one family, their fates interconnected. While the natural world is not without competition over survival, such competition does not resemble the conflicts between human societies, which can so often become a zero-sum game. Today, in facing the challenges of climate change, drought, species extinction, racial conflict, economic inequality, and hostile struggle between great powers, we seem to be faced with a reality in which hegemons exert force over the weak, or two hegemons collide directly. At this moment we require more than ever a movement of thought that is generated around the concept of “co-becoming” or “co-existence,” one which mobilizes the kingly way of a “game without limits” in which both sides find ways to cooperatively win, rather than the way of the hegemon, whose “game with limits” can only have a “singular winner.” The Way of co-becoming does not deny the existence of competition, even conflict, but actively works to avoid relations from devolving into a war of force which “can know no end.” The way of co-becoming is dedicated to thinking of how, within the dialectic interplay between myself and the other, grounded in mutual reliance, we can transform relations defined by a “binary” struggle over my life at the cost of your death, or vice-versa, into becoming the ground for a relation of mutuality in which the space exists for both sides to be protected forever.
The College of Liberal Arts at Sun Yat-sen University (Kaoshiung) has promoted the notion of Taiwan as being a “trans-cultural Sino-Island,” which is itself connected to a philosophical ideal and an intellectual practice. We hope to use this notion to promote an intellectual movement dedicated to the concept of “co-becoming,” building a platform to promote dialogue and mutual transformation between different positions on a variety of questions. We take as our ground of practice not only the oceanic rhythms of Kaoshiung as a port city to the world, but the entirety of Taiwan’s humanistic culture. On the one hand, we seek to “dynamically connect the past and the present” by re-evaluating and re-mobilizing Sinology’s traditional resources within our present day. On the other hand, we also seek to “dynamically connect the Eastern and Western worlds,” inviting Sinologists and thinkers whose works have crossed intellectual fields and cultural terrains, coming together to think collectively about a “philosophy of co-becoming,” enabling the “transcultural Sino-island” that is Taiwan to, in this era of intense anxiety, express its ever valuable cultural soft-power.
From September 7 to 9, 2022, the College of Liberal Arts at Sun Yat-sen University, in partnership with the Center for Chinese Studies at the National Central Library and the East Asian Academy for New Liberal Arts at the University of Tokyo, will host “Philosophies of Co-Becoming and the Sino-Island: A Transcultural International Conference.” We look forward to all participants attending and collaborating. This conference will revolve around the following core concerns: research regarding the classics of the Chinese world and their modern interpretation; re-examining the value of Sinology understood in transcultural perspectives; developing the potential of a philosophy of co-becoming from out of the resources of the Sinological tradition; exploring the meaning of a philosophy of co-becoming, as well as ways to develop it; how to foster imaginative transformation between deeply imbedded, conflicting positions as well as the myriad plurality of things; a paradoxical form of thought in which a singularity can become a duality, while a unified duality can also become a singularity, that is to say the dialectical dimensions of co-becoming. In staging this conversation, the organizers which to promote multiple approaches and ideas on how to nurture philosophies of co-existence.
