Hi folks.
I got this wonderful video in yesterday from expat Robert, who lives in Baltimore Ontario Canada. Robert is a young 77 year old.
He left the Clonduff Estate in Belfast Northern Ireland at the age of 18 and is now 59 years away! ( Clonduff is just down the road from us. )

Robert wanted to show me what the weather was like at his home today!
( Canada and America are experincing very low temperatures and snow storms at present. )
So he takes us on a wee walk round his home. He shows us the snow, the scenery, the snow blowers, and how he heats his home in these severe conditions.
This is obviously, 'a world away', from what we experience in the Castlereagh hills of Belfast Northern Ireland!!

Robert tells us,
'Our normal daytime temperature at this time of year -11 to -15C, that night time temperature of -27 C is the coldest we have seen in all the years we lived in Baltimore. Although I must say we spent a winter in Deep River Ontario in the Ottawa valley where -40 was not uncommon.

The GMC diesel SUV has a plugin electric engine Block Heater that can be used if needed, which is not very often, it warms the antifreeze making starting a lot easier in the very cold weather but it's the battery that really determines the ease of starting I had to boost my 7 year old battery after that -27C overnight temp.

Heating bill (wood pellets / electricity) is about $2,500 Cad. a year which is about 1,400 Pounds.

There is no real issue with piping due to wall insulation and we keep the house at 23C, outside water pipes a buried at least 4ft. deep which is below the frost line.

We still have lots of animals around Coyotes, Deer, Squirrels, Fox and feral Cats but mostly they are not to active around the house and tend to stay in wooded areas. Birds include Cardinals, Blue-jays, North American Robins, Turkeys, Canada Geese fly South but most of the birds like the animals stay in the wooded areas.

Getting around in Winter is not usually a problem as they look after the roads really well, plowing snow and put down a sand salt mix when needed.'

Can i say a huge thank you to Robert for taking the time to take this video and then send it to me! Wow! What a guy! .....And many thanks to other folks round the world for doing the same. I find this fascinating how other folks live in severe conditions.
