Double Dragon is a 1987 beat 'em up video game developed by Technōs Japan and distributed by Taito for arcades across Asia, North America and Europe. It is the first title in the Double Dragon franchise. The game's development was led by Yoshihisa Kishimoto. The series focuses on martial arts street fighting against criminal gangs. Numerous sequels and other media have been produced in the decades since.

Double Dragon between the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s was one of the most popular and very influential titles in its genre, thanks also to innovative features such as scenarios with in-depth movement (2.5D) and some platforms on which climbing, the possibility of collecting different weapons, including improvised ones for brawling, and cooperative multiplayer.

The two arcade sequels, Double Dragon II: The Revenge (1988) and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone (1990), were also well received by critics and audiences. The fourth title, Super Double Dragon (1992) released only for Super Nintendo consoles, was not as successful and marked the beginning of a decline of the saga, which in the following years lost its fame among the general public. Double Dragon (1995), a spin-off of the fighting fighting genre, again by Technos, and Double Dragon Advance (2003, Atlus), were not enough to get the series off the ground from a commercial point of view.

Double Dragon was one of the first video game sagas to expand widely into other media, inspiring a comic series, the animated series Two Dragons for a Black Belt (1993) and the film Double Dragon (1994), with Paul Dini among the authors . The film, however, was cheesy and a failure that failed to recoup the entire $8 million cost.

Over the years the production of original games has continued by various companies. In 2015 the rights to the Double Dragon brand were acquired by Arc System Works, already author of the conversion of the first arcade for Sega Master System in 1988. Arc System published Double Dragon IV (2017), a retro style game.
