How Gamers In Kashmir Compete Without Internet

If you were a 90s kid with access to the internet, it’s likely that you grew up on games like Counter-Strike, Tekken and Contra. Irtika, Athar, and Toha are gamers like you, except they live in India’s Jammu and Kashmir, a region that saw the most number of internet shutdowns in the world in 2022.

In the past few years, India’s electronic sports (esports) industry has grown astronomically and some reports value it at over a billion dollars. This year, the Indian government officially recognized it as a multisport and even named a team to represent the country at the Asian Games.

But how can young people—with fraught access to the internet—expect to cash in like the rest of the country?
