The Pahoy Pahoy Festival of Calbiga originated from an incident where Calbiganon farmers were troubled by a group of birds known as "Maya." To deter these birds, the farmers created "Pahoy," a human-shaped figure made from recycled materials like "Dagami" and old shirts. Initially, the farmers attempted to scare off the Maya birds by shooting at them.

One day, a farmer unknowingly shot a bird that turned out to be a Diwata, or Fairy, residing in the land. In retaliation, the Diwata's family or group cast a punishment by altering the weather, leading to disastrous (sakuna) and flooding throughout the land. The calamity resulted in the tragic loss of many farmers' lives.

In the midst of this crisis, Berhin Dela annunciation, appeared to aid the struggling farmers. With her help, the farmers were able to rebuild their lives and cultivate a healthier and more prosperous existence. This event marked a turning point for the community, leading to a brighter future for the farmers of Calbiga.
