UK Doctors Vote for Five-Day Strike After Pay Deal Rejected
Doctors in England have voted overwhelmingly to proceed with a planned five-day strike, escalating a long-running dispute with the government over pay and working conditions.
Members of the British Medical Association (BMA) representing resident doctors — who make up nearly half of England’s medical workforce — voted 83 percent in favour of strike action, with turnout at around 65 percent in an online ballot. The walkout is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Wednesday and continue through to the following Monday.
The vote came after doctors rejected the government’s latest offer, which focused on training reforms and job opportunities but did not include additional pay increases. Union leaders say the proposal fails to address years of real-terms pay erosion and limited career progression, and are calling for a more meaningful offer from ministers.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting criticised the planned strike as “self-indulgent, irresponsible and dangerous,” warning that hospitals are already under severe strain due to a surge in flu cases pushing admissions to record levels for this time of year. Officials caution that the strike could result in cancelled appointments and delayed care, further stretching the NHS during a critical winter period.
As England prepares for the walkout, patients, hospitals and policymakers are watching closely — with hopes that last-minute negotiations could still prevent major disruption to health services.
