Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. Osteosarcoma is a common type of bone cancer. It is most predominantly found in young patients whose age is between 10 to 20 yrs. The most common location where osteosarcoma is found is near the knee joint, the lower part of the thigh bone (femur bone), or the shoulder area.

In this treatment of osteosarcoma, doctors have to make an important decision whether to treat it with curative treatment or palliative treatment i.e., should the treatment focus on curing the disease or providing relief to the patient in case the disease has spread to other organs of the body and is incurable.

In 90% of the cases, the treatment with which patients are treated is of the curative type. In osteosarcoma treatment chemotherapy & surgery are the two important modalities which take place.
Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy is a technique in which a patient undergoes 3-4 cycles of chemo before an operation. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is chemotherapy that a person with cancer receives before their primary course of treatment. The aim is to shrink a cancerous tumor using drugs before moving on to other treatments, such as surgery.

Surgery for osteosarcoma involves wide-excision which is the standard procedure in most cases.
