(27 Sep 2017) Ivanka Trump joined Microsoft President Brad Smith and Code.org founder Hadi Partovi in visiting a Virginia charter school, where they touted computer science to students.
She told students that her father, President Donald Trump, signed a presidential memorandum that instructs the Department of Education to prioritize STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and computer science education.
"Each administration can prioritize for the Department of Education what they think are foundational, and so important, as we look to align the skills you all are learning in the classroom with the jobs that are in demand in the modern economy." she said.
According to the White House, the Presidential Memorandum directs Secretary of Education DeVos to place high quality STEM education, particularly Computer Science, at the forefront of the Department of Education's priorities.
The administration has established a goal of devoting at least $200 million per year in grant funds towards this priority.
Under the memorandum, the Eduation Department is instructed to explore administrative actions that will add or increase focus on Computer Science in existing K-12 schools as well as post-secondary education.
