Elevated genre refers to horror or thriller films, produced with the desire to deliver unique fresh stories. Sometimes misunderstood, that term is actually a great focus point to explore, as a producer, how to produce genre films a new way. With a team of two talented young producers, Alessio Morello & Oscar Gervet, we’ve explored here what does Elevated really means?
Elevating a script often means that you’ve combined two genres to create a more dynamic story than normal. Or that you’ve integrated as a producer, a hook or a new narrative angle on a specific movie genre (thriller, horror) resulting a quite original film.

MEMENTO is a great example of an elevated Thriller, as it embraces all the tropes of a film noir with an amazing narrative twist (story told in reverse). Even back in the day, movie such as SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (a serial killer film but with a strong female lead and a fascinating opponent) or SEVEN (a serial killer film but where the villain wins) could have been described as elevated since their offered more than the basic use of a genre to explore strong narrative or character elements.

The Same but different | Making something “elevated” means the writer took a basic concept or a familiar genre and combined it with something unique (a character, a location, a narrative angle) to make it completely different. This tends to echo that tip we heard a lot here in Hollywood: “give me something I know, but with a new angle”. That “But with” segment is clearly a fascinating trigger as it offers the chance to explore the legacy of genre films while always re-inventing it.

The necessity of a Human theme |A great elevated story will embrace a genre but with the addition of a great Theme, that would explore our human condition. A movie like INTERSTELLAR by Christopher Nolan (king of Elevated concept, as our friend Oscar Gervet noticed during our conversation) offers a fascinating space exploration story but sustained by the strong emotional theme of love between a daughter and her dad.

Flat character vs. complex character |Another key element of a great Elevated genre film, as mentioned by Alessio Morello, is the need to develop complex characters in your story. In an “unsatisfying films”, the character would be flat, one-dimensional. In a great elevated horror or thriller, the bond between the character and the audience will be strong, cause the writer took the time to develop who they are and why we should care. A movie like THE INVITATION by Karyn Kusama, takes that time to define what its lead protagonist is and what trauma aunts him.
Cinematic style Unique and experimentation.

But Elevated has also a lot to do with the visual execution and how a director will use a script in a visually compelling or unseen way. Directors such as Ari Astier (HEREDITARY, MIDSOMMAR) or Rober Eggers (THE WITCH, LIGHTHOUSE) have clearly find interesting visual way to subvert and transcend the material of their respective stories. So as a producer, you should always explore that aspect too, but also be aware that just perverting style (GRETEL & HANSEL) is usually not enough to consider yourself as a satisfying genre film.

Subvert the genre with a narrative or Emotional twist | Lastly, another probably major aspect of an effective genre film is when the story offers a narrative or emotional twist. Great example of this are film like COLLATERAL (an assassin story but told in real time), or THE HOST (a monster movie but through the perspective of a dysfunctional Korean family).

Sometimes to deliver a master-piece genre film, you must subvert the genre or combine two together. Oscar reminded us of how PAN’S LABYRINTH was such a great combination of a dark fantasy tale and an historical drama.
