We learned this song from a group from North Georgia, the Mashburn Brothers. They sang great trio harmony and had an excellent rhythm guitar player named Zip Silver (one of the coolest names ever). I think Don Fox may have played banjo with them (another cool name). Their version of the song appeared on the John C Campbell Folk School's Behind the Plow compilation in the 90's. Dad and his Brother Ray had some songs on that recording as well (as the Wilson Brothers). Every band or musician featured received a copy of the complete compilation, so that's where I first heard the Mashburns do the song. I saw them perform a few songs in person once not long after that recording came out, perhaps in Young Harris or Hiawassee, GA. Wayde Powell, II took me to the venue. I believe the Mashburns learned the song from Flatt and Scruggs. After we uploaded this video, I learned that Merle Haggard also recorded the song. In the recording of the Mashburns, I mistakenly thought the lead singer sang, "and soon fill with talk of prison life" in the first verse. When I listened to Haggard and Flatt sing it online, I could immediately tell the correct line is "and soon they'll turn off the prison lights." I should have known that what I sang didn't make a lot of sense, but then again, I've never been in prison (thank God), and I learned the song back before the internet, so it wasn't like I could cross reference lyrics. :-)
