Terrell Wong, architect, and Melinda Zytaruk, builder, always use Passive House principles in their work and have done a few project together in the Muskoka area and beyond. In this talk they will review some of the key components of Passive House (such as air tight membrane, breaking thermal bridges) using examples of a few key projects including a couple of cottage renovations. While Passive House doesn't dictate what materials you use Terrell and Melinda also discuss how important material selection is when creating a truly sustainable building.

Melinda Zytaruk is the General Manager and a founding member of the Fourth Pig Worker Co-op. Melinda is a PHIUS Certified Builder and in 2010 was trained as a PHI consultant. She has completed the Net Zero Home Building Science Training. She has a Masters in Environmental Studies from York University with a focus on community renewable energy and sustainability and is a graduate of the Renewable Energy Education Program of Solar Energy International located in Colorado.

Terrell Wong is an architect with over 25 years experience. In 2006, Terrell lead the winning team to the National Archetype Sustainable House Award. Their “Building Blocks” modular home concept was constructed at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority’s Kortright Centre as a showcase for sustainable design. In 2009, Terrell was a founding member and President of Passive Buildings Canada, a national membership-based, non-profit organization that promotes the Passive House concept. Terrell is the principal architect at Stone’s Throw Design.
