if you quit Disney, you didn’t return. You stayed six, eight, even ten years before you ever animated, if you stayed at all.

But Phil wanted something different.

He wanted the challenge of animating sooner, not waiting years in line.

So he moved to San Francisco, joined a small studio, and worked on commercials and industrial films, in English and Spanish. When another animator suddenly left, Phil found himself as the only animator, under pressure to deliver.

That pressure became preparation.

By the time Phil returned to Los Angeles in the early 1960s, he had something most assistants didn’t:
a full animation reel.

When layoffs hit Disney and many who warned him not to quit were still looking for work, Phil returned - not as an assistant, but as an animator.
