Harnessing the power of science and technology is becoming increasingly complex with the role
of the multidisciplinary team at the core of clinical care delivery.

Bringing together the triangle of care; the patientʼs needs, the collective experience and knowledge
of the team, and the environment of operation will drive the clinical outcome.

Understanding the
drivers to health and wellness, and the decisions made individually and collectively underpin the
opportunities for improvement in health care.

Implementation of the best care relies on the
knowledge of the clinical area and mutual respect of team members, and strong leadership.

Expanding the team to include research and innovation will drive towards excellence.
The research presented is focused on improvement in physical, psychological and physiological
outcomes. The areas of exploration include, cell based therapies and tissue engineering of skin,
the neurological response to burn injury, unscarring the scar, the systemic response to burn injury,
and the role of skin chemistry in diagnostics and surgical decision making.

The model of care of the Burns Service of Western Australia will be used to highlight the
opportunities and challenges linking with the Burn Injury Research Unit.

Professor Fiona Wood AO, University of Western Australia Medical School, is a Plastic &
Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in the field of burn care, trauma and scar reconstruction.

As Director of the Burns Service of Western Australia since 1991, she is a consultant surgeon at both
the South Metropolitan Health Service, Fiona Stanley Hospital and the Child and Adolescent
Health Service, Perth Childrenʼs Hospital.

As Director of the Burns Injury Research Unit at UWA, she leads an interdisciplinary team with
broad collaborations focused on the translation of science and technology to improve clinical
outcomes.

She was Australian of the Year in 2005, and sits on a number of boards including the Royal Flying
Doctor Service, supports research and innovation across the health sector and is a mother of six.
