U.S. stocks mostly edged higher on Wednesday after a strong revenue forecast from software giant Oracle lifted hopes for the AI sector. The company's shares jump 36%

Meanwhile, the Producer Price Index (PPI) unexpectedly declined in August, further bolstering the case for the Federal Reserve to consider cutting interest rates next week.

At the close of today’s session, the S&P 500 index climbed 0.3% to notch another record high, while the Nasdaq Composite also closed in positive territory to set its own record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, fell 0.5% from its previous record high.
On the economic front, the August wholesale price index came in much cooler than expected, registering a month-over-month decline against expectations for a 0.3% increase.

Year-over-year, the PPI was up 2.6%, which was also lower than the 3.3% that was expected.

This data sets the stage for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) release on Thursday, which will be the last major inflation report before the Fed's policy meeting next week.
From a technical perspective, all major indexes experienced a down day when comparing their opening and closing prices. This, along with the weak performance of the Dow components, suggests that institutional market participants were not shy of selling into the good news.

Given these observations, it may be prudent to add a layer of protection to portfolios heading into the expected volatility of next week.
