Judith Hann reports on a new, cheap telephone answering machine that connects up to a home tape recorder. The simple system cleverly detects changes in the voltage along the telephone wire to work out when to start recording and when to stop, preventing the annoying 30 second gap between messages.

Could this be the system to finally take answering machines out of the office and into our homes?
