Willie Thorne and Steve Davis made it to the Crucible in the last 20 and 18 editions, respectively, and almost always won in Round 1. Also, they had met 37 times in professional competition, making Davis the most frequent opponent for Thorne and Thorne the third more frequent for Davis. However, against all odds, this is the first and only time they have met at the World Championship.

This fantastic match was also the last professional game between the two.
