During the Gulf War in February 1991, retreating Iraqi forces, following their defeat by U.S.-led coalition troops, deliberately ignited nearly 700 oil wells across Kuwait. The resulting fires raged for months, sending thick black smoke into the sky that could be seen from space and creating vast oil lakes on the desert floor. This catastrophic act left a long-lasting scar on Kuwait’s environment and remains one of the most extreme examples of ecological destruction caused by war.
