Queensland Rail: The Backbone of Queensland’s Rail Network!!

Queensland Rail is one of Australia’s most extensive and historically significant railway systems, operating a vast network that serves both long-distance travelers and daily commuters. The network covers thousands of kilometers across the state of Queensland, stretching from the tropical north to the bustling southeast and the remote western regions.

As of today, Queensland Rail operates more than 6,600 kilometers of track and serves over 150 stations throughout the state. The network is divided primarily into two main service types — Citytrain services and Traveltrain services — each catering to different travel needs.
In terms of the size of the railway system, the "Railways in South East Queensland" is the third largest in Australia (the largest is Railways in Melbourne and the second largest is Sydney Trains).
In terms of annual ridership, the "Railways in South East Queensland" is the fourth largest in Australia (Sydney Trains has the largest annual ridership, Railways in Melbourne is second, and Railways in Perth is third).

The Citytrain network, centered in the Greater Brisbane area, connects the capital with surrounding cities and suburbs such as Ipswich, Caboolture, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, and Redcliffe. Operated with modern electric multiple units (EMUs), interurban multiple units (IMUs), and the more recent New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) trains, the Citytrain system provides high-frequency, comfortable, and efficient transportation for commuters. The system operates on 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow gauge track, which is standard across Queensland’s railways.

In contrast, the Traveltrain services connect regional and rural parts of Queensland, offering scenic long-distance journeys across the state. Famous services include the Spirit of Queensland, which links Brisbane and Cairns with modern tilt-train technology; the Spirit of the Outback, running from Brisbane to Longreach; the Inlander, connecting Townsville and Mount Isa; and the Westlander, serving routes between Brisbane and Charleville. These trains provide a more leisurely, scenic experience, allowing passengers to appreciate Queensland’s diverse landscapes — from coastal plains to arid outback regions.

Major hubs in the Queensland Rail system include Roma Street Station in Brisbane, which functions as the central interchange for both suburban and long-distance trains. Other important stations include Central Station, Fortitude Valley, and Bowen Hills for urban services, as well as Rockhampton, Townsville, and Cairns for long-distance routes.

Queensland Rail continues to modernize its infrastructure and fleet, investing in upgraded signaling, station accessibility, and environmentally friendly train technology. It remains not only a critical component of Queensland’s transport network but also a symbol of the state’s development and connection across vast and varied landscapes.

An underground railway tunnel is under construction that will pass directly beneath Brisbane's CBD and under the Brisbane River. It's named "Cross River Rail" and consists of a new 10.2 km (6.3 mi) line through the CBD from Dutton Park in the city's south to Bowen Hills in the city's north, connecting existing Brisbane rail lines. The project includes 5.9 km (3.7 mi) of twin tunnels and will deliver four new underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street and Roma Street, with Exhibition Station upgraded. It's expected to open in 2029.
