Today let's see how to make Dal Curry | Parippu Curry. Parippu curry is a comforting meal when served with rice, accompany a veggie thoran, some pickle and papaddums by the side. Dal and rice are an evergreen combination for Indians. Parippu curry can also be served with chapati, roti or even dosa and idli.
You can either use Split Green Gram (Moong dal, Mung dal) or Yellow split Pigeon peas (Arhar dal, Toor dal, Tuvar dal) to make this recipe. In this video, I have used moong dal.

INGREDIENTS:
Split green gram | Cherupayar parippu | Mung dal: 1/2 cup
Onion: 1/2 sliced
Tomato: 1 sliced
Green chili: 2 sliced
Curry leaves :2 spring
Turmeric powder: 1/4 tsp
Red chili powder: 1/2 tsp (optional)
Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
Dry red chili: 2
Garlic: 2 cloves
Shallots: 2 no sliced
Water: 2 cups
Oil: 2 tbsp
Salt: to taste
INSTRUCTIONS/DIRECTIONS:
1. Rinse moong dal in water a couple of times. Then add the dal, onion, tomato, green chili, 1 spring curry leaves, turmeric powder, water and salt to a saucepan and cook till the dal is softened and cooked well. Keep this aside.
TEMPERING (SPICES) FOR DAL CURRY:
2. HEAT oil in a pan over medium heat. ADD mustard seeds, let it splutter, then add dry red chili, shallots, curry leaves and garlic, sauté stirring often till shallots turn golden.
3. TURN-OFF the stove/heat and add red chili powder(optional), and stir vigorously to ensure the spice don't burn, but the oil turns red, about ten seconds.
4. Now pour the mixture to the dal curry and mix well.
RECIPE NOTES/TIPS:
· Adjust the amount of water to get the desired consistency you want.
· This recipe works well with any type of lentils.
· If you want, you can use a pressure cook to cook dal.
