If you own a Jeep Wrangler or Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 liter and an automatic transmission, you need to see this video.
There are nearly 1 million of these Jeeps on the road today in North America and they are known for having issues with the Crank Position Sensor – not only high failure rates but also some tricky installations steps that cause lots of headaches if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
Here we will go over some of the key removal and replacement steps we recommend with this sensor on these Jeeps:
1. It is easiest to access this sensor when the vehicle is lifted in the air, so once you have the vehicle safely lifted on jack stands or vehicle lift make sure you disconnect the battery
2. Now we can start working on the sensor. It is located on top of the transmission bell housing straight down from the firewall.
3. There is a 11mm bolt holding this sensor in place, we will want to remove that first.
4. You will have to twist or turn the sensor almost 180 degrees in order for the bolt mounting hole to clear the firewall and other components close to the sensor.
5. Once you have the sensor out, it is very important to thoroughly clean the mounting hole here, this step is commonly skipped and will cause issues when installing the new sensor and drivability. Use some compressed air to blow out dust, grime, and debris from the hole.
6. Loosely guide the new sensor pigtail towards the front of the engine, then install the new sensor in the hole and start the mounting bolt.
7. Lightly push down on top of sensor while tightening the mounting bolt.
8. Once you have the bolt tightened down, go ahead and plug in the new sensor.
9. Reconnect the battery and start the vehicle.
10. Note that the installation spacer on the sensor may make a scraping sound for the first 5 to 10 seconds of running. Clear any check engine lights on and test drive the vehicle.
11. And that's it! You've successfully replaced the sensor in your Jeep.
