The City of Valdez invited Elena Suleimani, from the Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC) in Fairbanks, Alaska, to present tsunami education to various public and private-sector organizations in Valdez - October of 2021. Several local stake-holding organizations were unable to attend her in-person presentations during that visit due to the COVID-19 virus. The City recruited the assistance of Seed Media to assist with the creation of an in-studio recording of her presentation that could be shared, not only with those organizations that missed out, but with all persons in the interested public. Her presentation offers a highly interesting and informative 51-minute journey covering the “science” of tsunamis, as well as how to recognize and respond to an active tsunami, in a way easily understandable to both lay persons and professionals. This presentation is of special interest to those living, recreating, and working in coastal communities.

The City has partnered with Elena, and the AEC, on several projects and has appreciated her down-to-earth expertise as a leading scientist in the field of earthquakes and tsunamis. Check out her bio below:

Elena Suleimani holds a B.S. Degree in Radiophysics and Electronics from the Gorky State University, Russia, a M.S. degree in Physical Oceanography from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She did research in the area of nonlinear dynamics of tsunami waves at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1986-1993), and later she studied numerical modeling of tsunami waves at the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (1993-1996). Elena is currently at the Geophysical Institute in Fairbanks and is working on tsunami inundation mapping for Alaska coastal communities.

Key areas of tsunami expertise/interest: Numerical modeling of tsunami waves generated by tectonic, volcanic and landslide sources. Tsunami education and outreach in Alaska coastal communities.
