God Raised Jesus Unto Himself | Quran

Описание к видео God Raised Jesus Unto Himself | Quran

Dr. Shabir Ally discusses the Quran 3:55, wherein God says to Jesus (on whom be peace), "I will grasp you fully and raise you up to Myself." Dr. Shabir explains that this verse is often misunderstood due to the Arabic term used. "Tawaffa" (تَوَفَّى) is derived from the root word "wafā" (وَفَى), which generally means to fulfill, complete, or take in full. Dr. Shabir explains that this term, when applied to humans, can have multiple meanings depending on the context. Its primary meaning is "to take in full", which suggests that God took Jesus fully from this world. Alternatively, while the term does not etymologically mean death, it is often used euphemistically to describe the act of taking a person’s soul completely, which in many contexts means death. The term is also used in the Quran to describe the state of sleep, suggesting a temporary state of taking rather than a permanent one, like death. In the context of Jesus's ascension, the term "tawaffā" is interpreted by Dr. Shabir to mean that God took Jesus in a state that is ambiguous. This interpretation aligns with the belief that Jesus was not permanently dead but was taken by God and will return to Earth in the future. Therefore, "taking in full" here conveys the concept of God fully taking Jesus from the earthly realm into another state of existence, without the finality that the term "death" would imply. This ambiguity aligns with differing Muslim and Christian beliefs about Jesus's ascension and suggests that the Quran is bridging the narrative gaps between Islam and Christianity.
