Tensions in East Asia have escalated again after China conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan. According to data from the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense, as of 3:00 PM local time, a total of 89 Chinese military aircraft were recorded operating in the area, with 67 of them entering the zone requiring a military response from Taiwan. Furthermore, 14 Chinese People's Liberation Army military vessels and 14 Chinese coast guard vessels were detected in the waters around Taiwan.

The exercises were conducted without prior public warning regarding live fire on the first day. However, maritime traffic in the Taiwan Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, was reportedly not significantly disrupted. The situation is expected to change as the exercises enter their second day, following the Chinese military's announcement that it will conduct live-fire exercises from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM local time and expand the exercise zone to include the use of live ammunition.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, through defense officials, assessed these activities as provocative. Meanwhile, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu also issued a strong statement, calling China's military exercises an escalation that threatens regional stability and contradicts the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. He emphasized that these actions send a dangerous signal to regional peace.

William Yang, an East Asia analyst at the International Crisis Group, assessed that the area of ​​this exercise was larger than previous ones. He stated that this step demonstrates China's efforts to strengthen its anti-access and area denial capabilities, while also sending a direct message to the United States and its allies, especially Japan, regarding Beijing's determination to prevent external intervention in a Taiwan conflict scenario.

The exercises also take place amidst internal dynamics within the Chinese military, following a wave of high-ranking purges that have raised questions about combat readiness. Taiwanese security observer Jaime Ocon believes that China's ability to conduct surprise exercises is now accelerating and poses a high risk to regional stability. He warned that such a situation could easily escalate into an uncontrolled escalation.

From Beijing's perspective, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office stated that the military exercises are aimed at suppressing what they call collusion between Taiwanese separatist forces and external parties. China has reiterated its view that Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to reunify it, a claim the Taiwanese government continues to reject.

Despite the escalating tensions, Taiwan's financial markets have remained relatively stable. Taiwan's main stock index has even continued to strengthen, reflecting investors' tendency to discount short-term geopolitical risks amid strong demand for the domestic technology sector.
