The race for the tape between Mercer Island WA's Owen Powell and Crater OR's Josiah Tostenson was one of the most exciting in the history of the storied Woodbridge Cross Country Classic.

Powell and Tostenson, both potential sub-four milers in their senior years of high school, pushed each other under Leo Young's meet record time on Saturday night.

Powell pulled it out, 13:30.3 to 13:30.5.

They are the fastest two times ever recorded on a 3-mile high school cross country course.

"I love Josiah. He's an awesome kid and he's so tough," Powell said. "He really made me work hard for this one today. I just knew going through this race if I could hold on for two miles and then compete after that would be my best chance to run as well as I wanted to."

No. 1 Herriman of Utah, the defending national team champions, won an unprecedented third straight team title with 58 points.

Herriman put all five of its scorers in the top 25, led by Jackson Spencer, who was sixth overall in 13:49.2. The Mustangs' five all arrived with a span of 23 seconds. Tayshaun Ogomo was eighth, Jonah Tang was 16th, Micah Tang was 24th and Noah Manwaring was 25th.

Southlake Carroll, No. 6, was second with 173 points. Junior standout Caden Leonard led the team with a fourth-place finish (13:41.8).

No. 11 Crater of Oregon was third with 187 points, with Tostenson and Tayvon Kitchen finishing in second and fifth place overall.

No. 22 Hamilton of Arizona was fourth with 226 points.

No. 8 Coeur d'Alene of Idaho was fifth, led by third-place finisher Maximus Cervi-Skinner (13:37.0), with 258 points.

The top finishing California team was Mira Costa, at eighth.

Dana Hills senior Evan Noonan, the 2023 champion, finished 18th.

Christian Yoder and Cooper McNee, teammates at Oak Christian CA, went 1-2 in the rated boys race in 14:15.7 and 14:16.5.

Mountain View CA won the team competition with 138 points.
