Eduard Bloch was an Austrian-Jewish physician best remembered as the personal doctor of Klara Hitler, Adolf Hitler’s mother. His life presents a striking paradox: though he was Jewish, Bloch was uniquely protected by the Nazi regime—by Hitler himself. Born in 1872 in Frauenberg (now Hluboká nad Vltavou, Czech Republic), Bloch served as a medical officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army before settling in Linz, where he became a trusted physician for working-class families. Among his patients was the Hitler family. In 1907, he diagnosed Klara Hitler with terminal breast cancer and provided care until her death. He charged the struggling family very little, a gesture that left a lasting impression on young Adolf. In later years, Hitler reportedly referred to Bloch as an “Edeljude” – a “noble Jew” – and even declared that if all Jews were like him, there would be no Jewish question. After the Anschluss in 1938, when Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany, Austria's Jewish population faced devastating persecution. But Bloch’s fate was different. When the Gestapo began seizing Jewish property, Bloch wrote directly to Hitler requesting protection. Astonishingly, it was granted. He was allowed to remain in Linz under Gestapo supervision and eventually received rare permission to emigrate to the United States—unharmed and with most of his possessions intact. In exile in New York, Bloch gave interviews about his experiences with the Hitler family, describing Adolf as a quiet, polite young man, deeply devoted to his mother. His recollections remain a valuable—if complex—historical insight into Hitler’s early life and character. Eduard Bloch died in 1945, just weeks after Hitler’s suicide. His story is one of extraordinary contradiction: a Jewish doctor protected by the very regime that sought to annihilate his people.
