The Great St. Bernard Tunnel, linking Switzerland and Italy through the Alps, was one of Europe’s great postwar engineering achievements. Construction began in 1958, and on March 19, 1964, the tunnel officially opened to traffic.

Stretching 3.6 miles (5.8 km) long and sitting 6,200 feet above sea level, the tunnel cut through the mountain where Hannibal once crossed with elephants. Now, families could make the same journey in their cars. Built at a cost of over $35 million, the two-lane roadway represented a milestone in European travel and commerce.

With avalanche protections and year-round access, the Great St. Bernard Tunnel symbolized a new era of connectivity between Switzerland and Italy—an engineering marvel “to yodel about.”
